It seems like the competition for the world’s tallest building is getting more intense. While the Burj Khalifa in Dubai holds this title in the present, it is all set to give it up to the Kingdom Tower, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. You may have heard of towers being X metre long but for the first time you can actually say that there is a vertical structure in the world that is about a kilometre tall and provides unobstructed and beautiful views of our world from high above (as high as it could). Ah, the marvels of modern architecture continue to enthral us.
Now that I’ve introduced the tower, here are a few fun facts about it:
Adrian Smith, who designed the Burj Khalifa, is also the architect of this project along with Gordon Gill (now that will be a resume that’s unmatchable)
Although official reports say that the building will be around 1km tall, the actual height of the building is being kept a secret (which we can’t wait for them to reveal!)
The elevators will provide a slow ascend to the top, not even as fast as the elevators we use to get to work, because the change in altitude and the air pressure so high would cause nausea.
At a height of 634 meters will be an observatory (the world’s tallest, duh). Imagine looking down from that height eh?
The highest observatory will be on the 157th level and there are three more observatories to provide views from various heights!
The Kingdom Tower is surrounded by 3 side views of Jeddah and the Red Sea (now that would be a sight!)
The Kingdom Tower is expected to finish construction in 2018. That’s too long a wait I’d say!
