Earth Hour in Dubai and all over the world is being observed on 19th March, 2016.
So what exactly is Earth Hour and what is happening in Dubai?
Earth Hour is the time from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm where 177 participating countries switch off their power for one hour to spread the message of saving our Earth from increasing global temperatures. Organized by the World Wildlife Fund, major landmarks like the Empire State Building and UN Headquarters in New York to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai will switch off their lights for one hour to show solidarity. Not just iconic landmarks but many offices and homes in the participating cities will shut down their power to show their support. Earth Hour is being followed for around 9 years now, with more and more places joining on a global level to show their support.
To celebrate Earth Hour, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy have planned special celebrations to commemorate the day and to raise more public awareness about this very important issue.
These events will occur at Bay Avenue Park in Business Bay and will kick-start at 4 pm. There is also a special Earth Hour walk that will begin at 8:30 pm, the same time that the Earth Hour will begin. Not just that, many events are taking place across the seven Emirates to commemorate this hour. This includes many candle-light dinner options offered by various hotels, especially in Dubai.
